As Anthony suggests, check the battery ground cable on the frame. I would guess that there’s an intermittent issue with the starter. I’m sure you don’t want to just replace parts but it sounds like you’ve ruled out the battery and alternator. I'd like to see how BMW sold the valve; there must be a technical explanation somewhere. Maybe that's why it never opens to 100%, but like 90% instead. There has to be something else at play, if it really opens fully at only 2.5K rpm. I'd like to see that graph, but on a 1250 . Hopefully somebbody will find technical info on the 1250. BMW sells protective rubber strips for the panniers. For the shifthead RT these are made of two pieces. I have them and highly recommend them. My wife has short legs so the protection bars interfere with her comfort, hence these rubber strips. It occurs when the engine is under load at all speeds and all gears. A typical circumstance - 50 mph in top gear.
