Start by getting ascended trinkets and an ascended backpack. Put as much agony resistance as you can on them with +8 or +9 infusions and then start doing the t2 dailies. Do the daily fractals every day in parallel with getting a weapon-crafting profession to 500.
Strikes' rewards are a daily thing. Raids also rewards currency you can use to purchase ascended, but you may want to get a understanding of high level PvE first before jumping in. Strikes is great for that. And, of course, you can always craft an ascended armor piece or weapon, though it may be a bit pricey.
First of all, ascended weapons can be obtained via crafting. Second, 5% difference is for stats (and actual weapom damage) BUT damage loss will not equal 5% it will be much lower (around 12.5% if i remember it correctly) and since in gw2 it's better to have more damage and kill mobs quicker it would be in your best interest to be fully geared.
WvW is also a pretty easy way to get them, quite a few of the reward tracks will award a stat selectable pieces as the final reward. No matter what, you can always get a headpiece and shoulders from the trading post. Look up the ice golems mae box and the shoulders of the ebon Vanguard. 2. Ludark.
Start getting Into endgame pve content (Fractals + Raids) and slowly swap your gear over to ascended. Gearing chars becomes much easier once you can play high level fractals and raids. If you want to improve in raids or need condi for wvw you can go for viper gear then. It will be less frustrating and faster.
Slight correction here: Fractals T1 (Level 1-25) is exactly meant to start working on ascended gear, you only need it for the higher tiers because of the agony resistance required. Technically you don't need Ascended gear for anything aside from Fractals of the Mists, that set of exotic armor will do you just fine.
Regarding weapons and armor, the only sure way to completely gear up is leveling the appropiate crafting to 500 and then crafting them. For free but luck dependant ways, go to world bosses, as they can drop ascended weapon and armor chests (I know people who dropped like 5+ weapon chests from tequatl only).
Ascended Weapons and Armor are more effort to obtain: You can get 3 armor pieces and 1 Weapon with Astral Acclaim and this is the easiest method. Most likely can be repurchased once every 90 days. Otherwise here are some consistent alternative methods. I find that armor takes more effort than weapons.
Once you start crafting Ascended or Legendary gear youâll need Obsidian Shards. The best way to get these on mass requires an npc whoâs only accessible after the Straits if Devastation meta event. Youâll run through your karma soon enough. You can also spend it once daily in the Karmic Converter item. 1.
